The Stacks is a book tracking and social reading app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights around it. We've written it in plain English because we think that's more useful than legal boilerplate.

Who we are

The Stacks is an independent app. You can reach us at hello@thestacksproject.com with any privacy-related questions or requests.

What we collect

When you create an account, we collect:

• Email address — used to log you in and send account-related emails (e.g. password resets)
• Username and display name — shown on your profile

You can optionally add:

• Profile photo
• Bio
• Favorite books

We also store the content you create in the app — shelves, books you add, reviews, book club activity, and replies.

What we don't collect

We do not collect location data, payment information, device identifiers, or browsing history. We do not use any analytics or advertising tools.

How we use your information

Your data is used solely to provide the app's features:

• Authenticating your account
• Displaying your profile and content to other users (based on your privacy settings)
• Sending account emails like password resets
• Enabling social features like book clubs, reviews, and following other readers

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.

Privacy controls

You have control over what's visible to others:

• Shelves — private by default. You choose whether to make a shelf public when creating it.
• Reviews — you can make a review visible to all users or keep it private (visible only to you).
• Book clubs — invite-only. Only members you invite can see club activity.

Third-party services

We use the following services to operate the app:

• Supabase — our database and authentication provider. Your account data and content are stored on Supabase's infrastructure. See Supabase's privacy policy.
• Resend — used to send transactional emails (e.g. password resets). Only your email address is shared for this purpose. See Resend's privacy policy.
• Netlify — hosts this website. See Netlify's privacy policy.

Age requirement

The Stacks is intended for users aged 13 and older. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If we become aware that a user is under 13, we will delete their account.

Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your data is permanently removed from our systems.

Your rights

You can:

• Delete your account at any time from the ··· menu on your profile page in the app. This permanently deletes all your data.
• Edit your profile information at any time from within the app.
• Request a copy of your data by emailing hello@thestacksproject.com.

Changes to this policy

If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Continued use of the app after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
